SALVIA officinalis Purpurea

SALVIA officinalis Purpurea

Salvia officinalis ‘Purpurea’ (purple sage) is an aromatic, evergreen culinary sage valued for its rich purple-tinged foliage and compact habit, bringing year-round colour and flavour to herb beds, pots and sunny borders. In early summer it carries short spikes of soft blue flowers that are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. Thrive it in full sun and well-drained soil—ideally light, sandy or chalky and only moderately fertile. Once established it is tolerant of dry conditions and poor soils, but it dislikes winter wet. A neat, bushy plant reaching around 30–60cm tall and wide, it’s excellent for containers and for edging warm, well-drained spots in Irish gardens.

To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
