Trachycarpus fortunei

Trachycarpus fortunei

Trachycarpus fortunei is a hardy, evergreen fan palm forming a single fibrous trunk topped with large, pleated, rounded leaves that bring strong architectural structure to gardens in Ireland. Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or light shade, and choose a sheltered position to reduce wind-tatter to the leaves. Mature plants may produce small yellow flowers in early summer, with dark fruits on female plants. Excellent as a focal point for courtyards and patios, suitable for large containers, and effective for adding vertical emphasis in sheltered borders; allow space as it can become a substantial specimen over time.

To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
