Tetrapanax papyrifer Rex P32

Tetrapanax papyrifer Rex P32

Tetrapanax papyrifer ‘Rex’ is a fast-growing, architectural shrub valued for its huge, deeply lobed green leaves that lend a bold, tropical feel to Irish gardens. Best in a sheltered spot with sun or light shade and fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, it can form a substantial clump over time and may produce airy sprays of small creamy-white flowers in late autumn in favourable seasons. In colder spells it can defoliate or experience some top dieback, but established plants often reshoot strongly from the base; a protective winter mulch is beneficial in colder areas. Ideal as a dramatic focal point among mixed planting or near warm walls where shelter from cold winds can be provided.

To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
