FICUS carica 120-130cm
FICUS carica 120-130cm
Ficus carica (common fig) is a sun-loving, deciduous small tree valued for its bold, lobed foliage and tasty figs in warm summers. For reliable performance in Ireland, plant in a warm, sheltered position, ideally a south- or west-facing spot or against a heat-retaining wall. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil and avoid waterlogged sites; once established it tolerates periods of summer dryness. Unpruned plants can exceed 5m over time, so prune after fruiting to manage size and encourage a compact, productive framework. Young plants appreciate protection from cold, drying winds.
To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
