CHAMAEROPS humilis
CHAMAEROPS humilis
Chamaerops humilis, the Mediterranean fan palm, is a compact, clump-forming evergreen palm prized for its stiff, fan-shaped green fronds and strong architectural presence. Slow growing and well-suited to Ireland’s milder areas, it thrives in full sun and also tolerates light shade, performing best in a warm, sheltered spot out of cold, drying winds. Plant in free-draining soil (sandy or loamy) and avoid waterlogging, especially in wetter months. Ideal as a structural focal point in borders or grown in a substantial container, it makes an excellent choice where a bold, Mediterranean look is desired. Ultimately, it forms a multi-stemmed clump reaching around 2–3m in height and spread over time.
To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
