Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' is a refined Japanese maple valued for its long-lasting, deep purple-red foliage that holds well through the growing season before turning vivid crimson-red in autumn. Small red-purple spring flowers are followed by winged fruits, adding quiet seasonal interest. Grow in a sheltered spot with moist but well-drained, fertile, acid to neutral soil; avoid chalky conditions. Best in partial shade, though it can tolerate sun in Ireland if the soil does not dry out and the site is protected from cold, drying winds. An elegant specimen for architectural or Japanese-style planting.
