Acer palmatum 'Sango-kaku', the coral-bark maple, is a graceful, deciduous Japanese maple prized for its vivid coral-red young stems that glow through autumn and winter for strong seasonal interest. The finely divided leaves emerge yellow-green in spring, turn fresh green in summer, and take on clear yellow to warm apricot tones in autumn. Best grown in moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil, it prefers partial shade and a sheltered position away from cold, drying winds and hot afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch. Over time it forms a small tree or large shrub with elegant branching, typically reaching several metres, making an excellent specimen for architectural and Asian-inspired gardens.

To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
