Allium sphaerocephalon

Allium sphaerocephalon, the drumstick allium, is a compact bulbous perennial sending up slender stems topped with tight, oval flowerheads that mature from green to rich purple in early to midsummer. Perfect for threading through sunny borders and gravel plantings, and excellent for cutting, it thrives in full sun and free-draining, moderately fertile soil (sand or chalk suits it well); avoid waterlogged sites. The foliage withers by flowering time, so partner with later perennials to cloak the dying leaves. Highly attractive to bees and other pollinators.
