Hesperis matronalis Violet

Hesperis matronalis Violet

Hesperis matronalis Violet

Dame’s violet is a short-lived, herbaceous perennial for cottage-style borders, producing upright leafy stems to around 90cm with clusters of richly purple, sweetly scented flowers in late spring and early summer. It thrives in full sun or light shade in moist but well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil (tolerant of chalk), is fully hardy in Ireland, and is valued by pollinators for its nectar-rich blooms. Ideal for informal borders and wildlife-friendly plantings.

To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
