Cornus sang. Midwinter Fire

Cornus sang. Midwinter Fire

Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ is a deciduous shrub grown for its outstanding winter stem colour, with young shoots glowing yellow to orange-red for vivid seasonal interest. Best colour is achieved in full sun, and stems are renewed by hard pruning in late winter or early spring (coppicing) to encourage fresh, brightly coloured growth. In early summer it bears small clusters of creamy-white flowers, and the plant is dependable in Irish gardens, performing well in most moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soils, including heavier clay. Ideal for winter structure in borders and for mass planting where its stem colour can shine.

To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
